The Thread of Life: we are born, we live, we meet others, and we fade away.
The thread of life, precisely, is tended by the Moirai. These three old women hold the fate of humankind in their hands. First comes Clotho, the Spinner, who spins the thread of life; then Lachesis, the Allotter, who unwinds it; and finally Atropos, the Inflexible, who cuts it. No one has ever succeeded in softening the hearts of the three spinners. They are unyielding, even the gods cannot defy them without endangering the order of the world. Lachesis ceaselessly unwinds the spindles, until the appointed day when Atropos severs the thread. Of uncertain origin, these three goddesses are both worshipped, for they govern life, and feared, for they bring it to an end. But isn’t that the very essence of life? We adore it, we cherish it, and at the same time, we constantly test its limits—many spend it behind a screen, and others, with a single snip of the scissors, end it. Emi Vauthey
